Bradcat's Japanese Culture Focus... Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

I read an interesting article on Japan Today recently in which they discussed the atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The debate was based around the question;

"Do you consider the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to be war crimes?"

Aftermath of Hiroshima

Obviously with the deaths of over 400,000 people, the event has been recognised as one of the worst war attacks in history. While the counter argument is that the surrender of the Japanese lead to the end of World War II, which would've taken even more lives if it had continued.

Where do you stand on this debate?
